Mandai Columbarium: finding and visiting a niche

Mandai Columbarium sits within the Mandai Crematorium and Columbarium Complex, in the Central Catchment Area in the north of Singapore. It is one of three columbaria run by the National Environment Agency (NEA), and one of the two where niches can still be booked. It holds about 133,000 niches in eight three-storey blocks, and the upper levels look out over Seletar Reservoir.

Where it is and how to get there

The address is 300 Mandai Road, Singapore 779393. The columbarium is open 8am to 5.30pm daily.

• Bus 138 from Ang Mo Kio Interchange stops at “Mandai Crematorium” on Mandai Road.
• Bus 171 from Yishun Interchange stops at “Mandai Crematorium & Columbarium” on Mandai Avenue, next to Mandai North Crematorium.
• By car: NEA’s 2026 Qing Ming notice said vehicles can only reach the columbarium via the Mandai Lake Flyover along Mandai Road, not from Mandai North Crematorium on Mandai Avenue. Taxis and private hire cars dropped off near the pedestrian gate on Mandai Avenue.

Finding a niche

The columbarium is large, so it helps to prepare before your first visit.

• Keep the niche details. Your booking records identify the niche by block, floor and room. Take a photo of them on your phone.
• Use NEA’s map. NEA publishes a map and photos of Mandai Columbarium showing the blocks and niche room layouts. NEA notes the actual layout may differ from the drawings, so confirm on site.
• Lost the details? Call the Mandai office on 6554 5655 (8.30am to 4.30pm, closed 1pm to 2pm) with the name of the deceased and approximate date of death.
• Leave time. First visits often take longer than expected.

Booking a niche

Niches are booked after cremation has been arranged. Your funeral director may help, or you can do it yourself.

Where to book: through the NEA ePortal, or in person at the counter. Counter hours are Monday to Friday 8.30am to 4.30pm and Saturday 8.30am to 12.30pm, closed 1pm to 2pm for lunch. There are no niche bookings on Sunday.

What you need: the deceased’s details (such as the digital death certificate), the cremation application or permit, the applicant’s NRIC or passport, and a letter of authorisation if you are not next-of-kin. NEA may ask for a statutory declaration if a document is missing.

Fees at the time of writing (the same at all government columbaria):

• Standard niche, holds about two urns: $500, one-time
• Family niche, holds about four urns: $900, one-time
• Selection fee to choose a location instead of the one allocated: $250

Payment is by NETS, cash card or credit card, and the booking is confirmed once paid. The fee covers the niche only, not the urn, plaque or installation. Plaque work must be done by an NEA-registered contractor.

Key rules

• No advance booking. You cannot reserve a niche before a death.
• Six-month deadline. The ashes must be placed in the niche within six months of the first application, or the offer lapses.
• Who is eligible. Singapore citizens and permanent residents, and foreigners whose parent, spouse or child is a citizen or permanent resident.
• Adding or removing urns needs NEA’s written approval first.
• Plaques are standard white marble unless NEA approves otherwise.

Visiting etiquette

• Burn joss paper, joss sticks and candles only in the burners provided, never in the niche rooms.
• Fresh flowers can go in the holder beside the niche. NEA clears them periodically.
• Take food and litter away with you. NEA’s Qing Ming notice also asked visitors not to eat or drink in the columbarium.
• No pets, except assistance dogs.
• Do not offer cash, gifts or red packets to staff.

Qing Ming and busy periods

The weeks around Qing Ming bring very large crowds. For 2026, NEA:

• opened the columbarium 24 hours a day from 21 March to 19 April;
• required drivers to book a parking e-appointment (in two-hour slots) to park between 6am and 6pm on those dates;
• ran a free shuttle bus every 15 minutes from Khatib MRT (Exit A) on weekends and Good Friday, 7am to 5pm.

Visitors on public transport or being dropped off did not need an appointment, and NEA encouraged people to visit outside the peak days. The 2026 advisory came out in late February; check NEA’s advisory for the current year before you go.
